If someone you know has dyslexic tendencies, or perhaps has been told they might be dyslexic, a full Diagnostic Assessment can provide a formal identification of dyslexia - which is a Specific Learning Difficulty (SpLD). The Assessment and subsequent Report will highlight the individual's strengths and relative areas of weakness, and provide recommendations to all those trusted with supporting them, along with strategies on how best to move forward with support and confidence.
An Assessment takes approximately 2.5 hours, which includes short breaks. It will involve completing a background questionnaire, and reading, writing and problem-solving tasks carried out in a relaxed and comfortable environment.
All assessments are conducted, and the report written, in accordance with the SpLD Assessment Standards Committee (SASC) current guidelines for diagnostic assessment and report writing.
The full Diagnostic Assessment Report is delivered within three weeks of completing the Assessment and can be shared with schools and other professionals supporting the individual with a new diagnosis. They can respond to the recommendations and put in place interventions and Individual Teaching Programmes to help the individual overcome barriers to learning and ensure a level playing field.
An Assessment Report for a secondary school or college student may include recommendations for adjustments for exams including the consideration of, for example, an allocation of extra time or the use of a laptop. For university students, the Report is completed in the required format to allow it to be used as evidence to support an application for Disabled Students’ Allowances (DSA).
